ROYAL Mail bosses have finally delivered on residents’ demands to move a postbox to outside a post office.
Post office and postbox were separated when the sub-post office moved about 100 yards along Front Street, Cleadon, six years ago.
Baffled locals questioned why the postbox was left at its original spot near the village’s war memorial.
Despite being able to send mail from inside the post office, some residents claimed the decision caused inconvenience. But now they are celebrating, after workmen used lifting gear to shift the postbox last week.
Retired teacher and resident Margaret Meling, who had complained to Royal Mail chiefs by letter, said: “It has taken far too long to move. There was absolutely no other reason to go to the spot where the postbox was except to send letters.
“It has been really inconvenient.
“As a resident, I have been pretty fed up at having to do that. This has come as a relief to a lot of people.”
It was feared Cleadon would lose its post office when sub-postmaster Edward Hall retired in late 2006.
Instead, the business was bought and moved into its present spot.
The former post office was purchased and has since been converted into a residential property – but with the postbox left outside.
Mrs Meling, who stood for Labour in Cleadon in this month’s local elections but was beaten by Conservative candidate Jeff Milburn, added: “I’m pleased that the site around the memorial can now be made nice.”
