TOWN representatives are to meet Royal Mail managers in a bid to save Milford Haven Sorting Office from closure.
The meeting comes at the same time as a petition is being drawn up to fight the move.
Town and county councillor Anne Hughes said the removal of the service from Robert Street to the Merlins Bridge base would “leave a great void in the culture of a once busy and vibrant community”.
Cllr Hughes expressed her concerns to members of the county council’s economy overview and scrutiny committee last Thursday.
Members agreed to an offer made by Royal Mail for representatives to meet with Milford Haven county councillors to discuss the proposals.
Residents are now being urged to sign a petition attempting to block the removal of the office.
Cllr Hughes said: “I hope the residents of Milford Haven will join me in a petition which is being drawn up to fight this withdrawal of a service which is working to the town’s satisfaction and towards retaining a service and employment we desperately need.”
A decision over the future of the Milford Haven sorting office is expected next month.
Cllr Hughes added: “The decline in business in Milford Haven is now of growing concern with the demise of the Job Centre and uncertainty of the possible closure of Peacocks if no successful buyer is found.'
