Rotten delivery

Dispatches: POST OFFICE UNDERCOVER C4, 8pm

Damaged mail, late deliveries or those sodding "Sorry, you were out" cards... if you've ever had a gripe about Royal Mail, this is the show for you.

Dispatches has been undercover with posties before, in 2004 and 2005, and revealed all sorts of failings that led to an official inquiry by jolly important people and a £10million fine.

Five years on, things don't seem to have improved that much.

Two reporters went in undercover as agency postmen and within five minutes it was clear things are still hugely messed-up in Royal Mail.

Not that we didn't all know that anyway. For one guy, the training involved shadowing another casual who dumped packages on doorsteps (naughty!), didn't lock his trolley (bad boy!) and left post unattended while he went off to buy sweets (slap on the wrist for you!).

The other reporter had more in-depth tuition - a manager telling him: "Make sure you look at the address before you put it in the door."

He was then sent out with another casual who managed to not only lose the post - but himself and his assistant with it.

You couldn't make up stuff like this. Add in arguments between delivery staff and managers, post not leaving the sorting office, parcels marked "fragile" being thrown around (by managers!) and money being stolen from cards and you wonder if next time you'd be better off delivering things yourself.

Never mind. Once privatisation comes along and even more cuts, the public will get the service that this Government wants it to receive.
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.
