Ad Hoc driving (mgv) - what should i be paid ?

hi...

i am a delivery postman but occassionally get asked to drive a mgv (600)...

when i drive on a particular day it may only be for an hour or so... what should i be entitled to in terms of ad hoc pay presumably on a daily basis..?

hope someone can answer as i have recently had a dispute with wages dept who claim that i get paid based on the number of hours i drive...?

just to clarify i mean what additional pay (allowance) should i be in reciept of when i perform any driving (mgv) work as part of my 'delivery day'

if on duty you get paid substitution per day. it works out about £12 a day before recent pay awards

i thought this was the case.... trying to explain to the girl in wages (HR) was like trying to bang your head against a brick wall...

i have left it with my office wages clerk to try to sort out... though she said they were unlikely to be willing to discuss individual cases....

i think their new system is up the swanny and the people on the help desk have no idea how allowances work... at the moment i am about £20 out of pocket and much worse off emotionally for the experience of the lack of knowledge from someone who should know what they are talking about....!

will let you know if my office clerk has had any success next week...!!

i've gone to stage one disagreement over this. the manager has finally agreed with the correct procedure. just waiting for the individuals to be paid a substantial amount of back pay. don't let them fob you off

just out of interest what is the mgv allowance for a full week....?? i think it is around the £67 mark (for 5 days obviously)...

you are substituted to a grade. £421 a week before recent pay deals

dont want to go off topic but a quick question

most 600 drivers now are allocated to the mail centre to bring mail to the MPU delivery offices

now take myself for instance, i used to be 600 driver before the vehicles were allocated to the mail centre and we lost those duties.

if a manager asks me for instance to take a 600 back to the mail centre from a delivery office due to the driver being being ill for example, and that our office has lost its OMV licence

am i legally able to drive that vehicle now that the OMV licence is dedicated to the mail centre

totally random question this to get the grey cells going and before you ask, i have not been trained on digital tacho so we are talking of paper tcho in this instance

I think you mean Operators License or O License? It should be ok because the vehicle you would be driving would still be operating out of its licensed operating centre, even if you are not. If you do not have a digi tacho then it must be a few years since you last drove a 7.5t? In that case I think the more pertinent question is whether you are still able to drive 7.5t without digi tacho, driver cpc or up-to-date training.

no, you can't.

CPC isn't an issue at the moment since people are still on their grandfather rights. When that lapses in sept 2014(?), you cannot drive any tachographed vehicle for profit or reward (i.e. get paid to do it)

(buses have a different CPC to lorries, and their grandfather rights run out in 2013 iirc)

On the subject of digital tacho's, RM policy is that if you don't have one, you don't drive. I can't remember the cut off date for retrofitting digi tacho's in the EU, but better to be safe than sorry and don't drive one, especially if you are not trained to use the tacho head.

O licences just tie a OMV to a company so if anything happens, the police know easily where it is based. You can drive a lorry with an O licence registered to a site that isn't yours, it's just bad practice.

I think you are confusing the acquired rights to driver CPC with the C1 category entitlement that came with a driving test prior to 1997. If you were a professional driver before sept 2009 you have aquired rights to driver CPC for five years and hence do not need driver CPC until 2014. New drivers can not drive >3.5t commercially without it.

Yes, sorry you are correct... that is why most of the 3.5t and above drivers at our DO are going through various CPC courses at the moment... to assure completion by sept 2014
