You can't make a complaint, because you'll end up on the conduct code.

Of course you can! You just need to take it outside of RM, once you have exhausted the internal procedures.

Sadly, you can't take it outside of RM. Until you have exhausted all the internal procedures, or it will badly damage your case. But one of my Collegues managed to do so a while back. The accusation against him was proved to be false, and his accusation against the Manager, was upheld. It took a long time to do. But it just ges to show, that if you are determined enough. We can have have Justice!

They do try and kill your complaints with delays, appeals etc in the hope you'll give up. Despite assistance, members often do give up- although sometimes you get unofficial results, like managers in acting positions getting knocked back, without official recognition the complaint was justified. Helps if reps are supportive (so my members tell me).

Are you referring to the Royal Mail telephone number?

Would much prefer the CWU Harassment Hotline 020 8971 7380 or 020 8971 7593 or email: cwu-helpline@cwu.org

Forget to mention that in November 2002 the then CWU Dep Gen Secretary John Keggie asked Linda Roy CWU to put in place the personnel, policies, procedures and mechanisms to deal with complaints of harassment in the then Consignia and BT. The main weapon in this was the creation of a telephone helpline in CWU headquarters. At the time this initiative was widely publicised in our journal The Voice which is sent to all members. Every one of them received a harassment pack.

In the first week of the telephone helpline CWU headquarters received three hundred calls. In the first year the telphone helpline in CWU headquarters had handled five thousand. On the second anniversary of the telephone helpline creation it was estimated that twelve thousand calls would be passed.

Every attempt is made to ensure that the Harassment Hotline is staffed on a daily basis. When the caller is purely making an enquiry this is logged. Where it is a specific complaint of bullying or harassment this is also entered into a case file. All calls, files and cases are treated with the utmost confidence.

Once a complaint has been received every attempt is made to establish the facts of the case. This is particularly important where members intend to make an application to an Employment Tribunal. Unless the member objects contact is made with the relevant branch to inform them of our involvement and to discuss the allegations. Where circumstances dictate our further involvement we will visit the branch and the member to discuss the case, to advise them of their rights and to arrange representation if it is required.

The nature of complaits ranges from attempted and actual rape, sexual assault, physical assault, pornographic, racist homophobic and obscene graffiti, abusive and threatening behaviour, foul andobscene language, racist and sexist jokes, and sex, race and disability discrimination.

It was costing the then Consignia a total of £7 million for sick absences and £3 million in compensation as a direct result of proven incidences of bullying and harassment in the workplace during 2001.

Regardless of any personal opinions that CWU members may hold against John Keggie, the CWU and our members owe him a debt of gratitude for his foresight and his concerns for victims of bullying and harassment in the then Consignia and indeed British Telecom.
