I understand your point Clash although it's unlikely a vote of no confidence would be called on an individual and obviously controversial point like that but the reality is you can't have a rep in place that the majority of members don't want.
Could any rep seriously continue after a vote of no confidence,even if branch had managed to talk a few round and swung a vote your way.
I couldn't.

I think the biggest mistake some reps make is not getting too close to management but forgetting to communicate with members,i can understand it because sometimes you would be better off talking to the york of D2D in the corner but when members see you disappear into the office for an hour and then you don't communicate what went on they tend to make their own s**t up.

That's what i thought.
It's as much to protect the manager from constant accusations of bias as anything else.
We've had a manager moved for that reason before.

Of course you couldn't.
But different people are motivated by different things.
If you want to be the rep because you get a few hundred quid, get a few days off delivery and can big yourself up to some online skank then the opinion of your members would count for very little.

In my office , our Union Rep is married to a line manager .. Is this allowed ? A lot of staff feel our " Rep " is now unapproachable as they don't feel he can be trusted to not discuss private issues at home . This has also resulted in us becoming a soft office in terms of fighting for the best way forward for everyone . The Line Manager in question has also had a very rapid and unquestioned rise from Postie to Line Manager as our Union rep rolls over and has his belly tickled by management . Please HELP !

There is no "potential" conflict of interest. We are talking about a unit rep and a line manager.
What issue of confidentiality? There is probably nothing a unit rep knows that couldn't or shouldn't be shared with management.
Because that is what a unit rep does - talks to managers about staff issues.

it's obviously not working in this situation, but I could see how it could. Some married couples I know are all-time champs when it comes to fighting and won't give an inch over anything:
