Dear Colleagues
Re: Moya Greene, New Royal Mail CEO - Information From Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) on Ms Green's Health and Safety Record:
CWU Safety Reps in Royal Mail Letters, Parcelforce and Post Office Ltd will be aware of the announcement that Canadian Moya Greene (the CEO of Canada
Post) has been appointed as the new Royal Mail Chief Executive replacing Adam Crozier.
Enquiries have been made with my counterpart in the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) to gauge Moya Greene's health and safety credentials.
Moya Greene's CV posted on the internet, amongst other things, details that in a previous role as Assistant Deputy Minister for Transport Canada, she was
responsible for:
· the privatisation of the Canadian National Railway and
· the deregulation of the Canadian airline industry.
Ms Green then went on to become CEO of Canada Post and on her departure the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) President Denis Lemelin said:
"If you compare the four years before Greene with the four years under Greene's management of Canada Post, the numbers show that injuries have gone
up 15.4% and grievances have gone up 59.3%."
Gayle Bossenberry, Canadian Union of Postal Workers [CUPW], 1st National Vice-President [Health and Safety Officer] has send the following message:
"The CUPW would like to offer the CWU our condolences regarding the appointment of Ms. Greene."
"It was always a challenge in dealing with Greene in particular in regards to her anti - Union attitude and anti - health and safety attitude."
"She has a deep-seated belief that the worker is to blame, and she has implemented several 'behaviour-based programs'."
"In her mandate here, she has also brought in 'Manulife', to administer the corporation’s attendance management program."
Gayle forwarded copies of two recent reports; one from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives which reports on health and safety in Canada Post amongst
other industries and the second is a CUPW report on 'Manulife' a company brought in to administer Canada Post's Attendance Procedure and Return to Work
Procedures.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Report entitled "Success is No Accident" states:
"Canada Post has by far the worst overrepresentation of workplace injuries. The accident rate at Canada Post has marched upwards since 2002. Despite high
injury rates Canada Post Managers were instructed to resist health and safety inspections (by the LAO, Canada's HSE) and to refuse to sign Assurances of
Voluntary Compliance (AVC) for health and safety violations (issued by LA, Canada's HSE). AVCs are the first tool LAOs use to protect workers health and safety."
The CUPW surveyed Members on their experience with Manulife and the study on 'Manulife' reports:
"More than half of the respondents who returned to work on modified duties after an illness or injury, felt they returned to work sooner than they thought they
should have because of pressure from the Canada Post, and/or were asked to perform duties which were beyond their medical restrictions, believed that this
worsened their medical situation."
Not being one to pre-judge people's performance in any given role we'll wait and see what develops in respect of the role and tenure of Ms Green. At a time
when despite some obvious safety and health challenges for the CWU there are many positive developments, policies, messages, standards and commitments
on Health and Safety and Safety Rep involvement coming from Royal Mail Group and the businesses, Royal Mail Letters, Parcelforce and Post Office Ltd. Let's
hope all Board appointments support a continued positive way forward and don't try to wreck all the good work.
Regards and Best Wishes
Dave Joyce
National Health, Safety & Environment Officer

Moya Greene From Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia
Moya Greene is a Canadian civil servant and business woman. Born in Newfoundland, Greene graduated from Memorial University of
Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Arts in 1974, and then attended Osgoode Hall Law School. On graduation in 1979 she joined the
Public Service of Canada in Ottawa as an immigration adjudicator, later taking positions in the Department of Labour and the Privy
Council Office. In the later position as Assistant Deputy Minister for Transport Canada, she was responsible for transport, overseeing
the privatisation of Canadian National Railway and the deregulation of the Canadian airline industry. In 1996 she joined TD Securities
as managing director of infrastructure finance and public private partnership. In 2000 she joined the Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce as senior vice president and chief administrative officer, retail products. In 2003 she joined Bombardier as senior vice
president, operational effectiveness, under CEO Paul Tellier. That same year she was named among the 100 most influential women
in Canada by the National Post, and in 2004 as one of the Top 40 female corporate executives in Canada by the Ivey School of
Business. After resigning from Bombardier at the end of 2004, she was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada
Post. During her period of tenure, she placed emphasis on cost cutting through cutting absenteeism, increasing automation and
improved labour relations. The result was a trebling of Canada Post's profits to C$281 million (£183 million), despite a 5.1 per cent
drop in revenues, resulting in a two year extension to her original five year contract. However, in her last year of tenure, the
Canadian Union of Postal Workers marked her fourth anniversary with a report card, with the CUPW's President Denis Lemelin
commenting: "If you compare the four years before Greene with the four years under Greene's management, the numbers show
that injuries have gone up 15.4% and grievances have gone up 59.3%." On May 27, 2010, Greene was appointed Chief Executive
designate of the United Kingdom's Royal Mail. Replacing the departed Adam Crozier from early July, the first woman to hold the post,
her duties are expected to include the part privatization of the UK's postal service

Moya Greene - Information From Canadian Union

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Well she is obviously a f***ing genius. She knows more than anyone else in Canada about railways, airlines and postal services; is there no end to her talents, lets hope she is well acquainted with the monarchy and the old school tie system

I think she is a shoe in to that system if this web page and quote is anything to go by.BELIAL wrote:Well she is obviously a f***ing genius. Of course that is an opinion of someone outside the control of RMC (see below)A lawyer from Newfoundland who helped crush Bombardier and derail CN waltzes into Canada Post with no experience in the field and randomly waves her magic wand around at will to wreck havoc on the company and the families it employs. That leave us with the other side of the coin. A ruthless, arrogant, I'm not going to listen to anyone experienced in the field axe murderer killing jobs at will for no apparent reason simply because it makes for a good headline.
