Vaccine letter delays saw East Lothian people miss appointments

THE Scottish Government has apologised after a delay to vaccine letters saw some East Lothian residents miss their coronavirus vaccination appointments.

Claims of postal delays led to a campaign across social media last week urging anyone who was due an appointment to contact the NHS helpline.

However, at the time the Scottish Government insisted that letters were being delivered on time and delays between appointments being made and letters arriving were normal.

Yesterday, during a press briefing, Dr Gregor Smith, Scotland’s chief medical officer, confirmed that there had indeed been an issue with appointment letters for people in the 60-64 age range being delivered on time across NHS Lothian.

And a spokesperson for the Scottish Government issued an apology to anyone who received their letter too late to make their appointment.

Facebook saw several posts warning people who had not received a letter to contact NHS Lothian to check shared hundreds of times last week.

Some people reported receiving letters just days before their appointment was due, while others claimed their letter arrived after the booking.

On Friday the Scottish Government said that while it was aware of an increase in ‘proactive’ calls to the freephone helpline which was shared on social media, there was not an issue, adding: “There can, on occasion, be a slight lag between an appointment scheduled and an appointment letter arriving on someone’s doorstep.” But following Dr Smith’s comments on Monday, the Scottish Government confirmed that there had indeed been issues.

A spokesperson said: “The Scottish Government is investigating with NHS National Services Scotland and Royal Mail to understand why there have been delays to appointment letters being received by people aged 60-64 in the NHS Lothian region.

“We would like to apologise to anyone who has missed their appointment as a result and for the inconvenience this may have caused them.

“We have been clear with the board that we expect anyone who has been affected by this issue to be rebooked swiftly.

“We are also working with the national vaccination helpline so that people within the NHS Lothian area can get through to speak to someone to help them get their vaccination, if they were affected by this delay.”

It is understood people due to be vaccinated yesterday (Monday) who missed their appointment will automatically have a new one booked, with letters sent out next week.

Anyone in the 60-64 year age group who missed an appointment on an earlier date can rearrange it by calling the helpline on 0800 030 8013.

NHS Lothian declined to comment directing all enquiries to Scottish Government.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

NHS Lothian and the Royal Mail have issued a joint apology after a number of Covid vaccination appointment were missed at the beginning of the week due to tardy appointment letters.

A joint statement released by NHS National Services Scotland addressed the recent issues with vaccine appointments in the Lothian area, and apologised for their late arrival.

The statement read: "The national programme would like to apologise to any resident who missed an appointment and for any inconvenience caused.

"Although the vast majority of vaccination appointments run smoothly, the national delivery partners met today to build a better understanding of what happened on this occasion.

"We are working closely together to ensure we give people the advance notice they need for vital vaccination appointments."

The joint apology was signed by Royal Mail, NHS National Services Scotland, NHS Lothian and the National Delivery Programme. Earlier in the week, many Scots in the 60 to 65 age group took to social media to complain they had not received a letter, but were told upon calling they had an appointment already booked.

Asked about the issue at the Covid-19 daily briefing on Friday, health secretary Jeane Freeman said she was unaware of any letter distribution issues, however the delay was confirmed shortly after by NHS Lothian.

The health board has said anyone who missed an appointment will automatically receive another invitation for a new appointment in the week commencing Monday March 22.

Latest government statistics indicate that Scotland has recorded 12 deaths from coronavirus and 625 positive tests in the past 24 hours.

It brings the death toll under this measure – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – to 7,529.

Speaking at the Scottish Government’s coronavirus briefing, the First Minister said 211,230 people have now tested positive in Scotland, up from 210,605 on Tuesday.

The daily test positivity rate is 3%, down from 3.8% on the previous day.

There are 422 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, down 18 in 24 hours, and 38 patients are in intensive care, a fall of four.

We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."
