Asda is to give bonuses worth more than £400 to 100,000 workers this month. The £413 pay boost will be awarded as part of February's pay packet.

Full time store workers will receive the full amount, while other workers who are paid by the hour will receive £269. Exact amounts may vary due to individual workers circumstances, the supermarket said.

Asda is splashing out £27.8m on bonuses for their workers. The money is intended as a thank you for staff's hard work during the "challenging circumstances" of the pandemic.

Asda’s people director Hayley Tatum said: "This payout is only possible thanks to the continued hard work and dedication of our store colleagues.

"They did a fantastic job serving millions of customers last year, often in challenging circumstances due to the pandemic, and their bonuses are well deserved."

The supermarket giant claims to be the only one which offers a bonus to workers once they have completed a three-month probationary period.

But the bonuses come at a difficult time for Asda as distribution workers threatened strike action earlier this week. A dispute is ongoing over pay, meaning members of the GMB union could walk out, leaving the supermarket short of staff and stock.

The union rejected Asda's offer to increase pay by 5-7.5%, saying it does not match up with the spiralling cost of living.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
