No shortage of lateral flow tests after Gov website overwhelmed with orders : SCOTS struggled to get hold of lateral flow tests online today.

All packs of Covid tests were stripped from the official UK Government website earlier - but health officials insist there is no shortage.

The tests have run out on the official Government website as Brits rushed to get supplies

It comes just days after Deputy First Minister John Swinney urged everyone to take a Covid test every time they go out.

People trying to order tests have today been told: "There are no more home tests available.

"Try again later. Or, you can go back and try to book a test site appointment instead."

Tests can still be picked up from pharmacies and test sites - but many people prefer using the Government site as they are delivered direct to homes.

But Prof Leitch said people could re-order from 8pm.

He told BBC Radio Scotland: “This isn’t a shortage of tests. What this is, is the UK Government has an allocation that it can send out. So it’s a delivery thing.

“So these are the ones that come through the mail, and in a 24 hour period there is a limit on how many they can just logistically send out in the Royal Mail.

“That limit has today been reached already.

“At 8pm that reopens and you get another 24 hours worth of those delivery slots for the tests.

“We’ve got hundreds of millions of these tests around the UK.”

A UK Health Security Agency spokesperson said: "Everyone who needs a lateral flow test can collect test kits - either at their local pharmacy, some community sites and some schools and colleges.

"Due to exceptionally high demand, ordering lateral flow tests on gov.uk has been temporarily suspended to fulfil existing orders."

It claimed there was no shortage of LFTs and the UK Government has enough stock to meet demand.

Boris Johnson was asked about the supply issues during a visit to a vaccination clinic near Paddington in west London, and told broadcasters there is a "ready supply".

The Prime Minister said: "They can get those tests, we do have a ready supply of lateral flow tests.

"If you can't get one online for any reason, then there are ample supplies in the shops.

"But what I think, if I may say so, what that also shows is that people are doing the sensible thing, and getting tests as well."

SNP Health Secretary Humza Yousaf said his officials were “in ongoing discussions” with the UK Government “urging them to resolve issues around ordering LFD test kits”.

He said that people could use a link on the UK Government’s NHS website to enter a postcode and find local pick-up sites.

But some people in parts of Scotland were reporting that none were available within 30 miles of their home addresses.

Ministers have ramped up pleas for checks before meeting others in a bid to minimise the Omicron 'tsunami' before Christmas.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon is set to make an announcement on Covid rules tomorrow, with further restrictions 'inevitable'.

Covid alert level raised to four as Omicron spreads meaning transmission is ‘high’ and ‘substantial’ pressure on NHS

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
