Most Covid rules in Wales - but not all - are set to be scrapped from 7 August.

Most Covid rules in Wales - but not all - are set to be scrapped from 7 August.

New Welsh government plans will see all legal limits on the number of people who can meet others end from that date.

Nightclubs could resume trading, and social-distancing laws inside will be replaced with a requirement for workplaces to assess the risk.

But face masks will still be required in most indoor public places, except in hospitality businesses, such as pubs and restaurants, or schools.

People will be asked to continue working from home wherever possible.

The plans depend on the state of the pandemic in Wales, and no new variants being identified.

The changes come despite rising cases of coronavirus in Wales, but mean more rules will remain in place than in England.

First Minister Mark Drakeford has told the Senedd that the Delta variant is in every part of Wales and "spreading quickly".

"There can be no doubt that we are experiencing the anticipated third wave of this pandemic, with the rate in Wales rising overnight to 145 cases per 100,000 people," he said.

"Community prevalence on this scale brings with it a set of real dangers that no responsible government or Senedd should ignore."

Mr Drakeford said while he was "reasonably confident" vaccination had weakened the link between infections and serious illness, there was still "a risk that this third wave of the pandemic could cause real harm".

"We are entering a new phase of the pandemic," he said.

Some rules will also be eased this Saturday - allowing for six people to meet in private homes and holiday accommodation, and with social distancing outdoors no longer required by law.

Ice rinks will be able to reopen, and the limits on numbers that can meet in public places or at events outdoors will be removed.

First Minister Mark Drakeford also confirmed that people who have been fully vaccinated will no longer need to self-isolate if they are returning from an amber list country, following decisions taken in England and Scotland.

But he criticised the UK government for having introduced the move, only putting it in place in Wales because it would have been "untenable" not to.

What Covid rules are easing in Wales on 7 August?

Ministers have proposed, if conditions allow:

No legal limits on the number of people who can meet others
All businesses and premises will be able to reopen
Firms will be expected to carry out a risk assessment
Face masks will be required in shops, on public transport and when accessing health care, but not in hospitality or education
People who are fully vaccinated will not need to self-isolate if they are a close contact of someone who has tested positive

The face mask rules will remain in place despite the UK government's decision to scrap them in England.

While the specific laws requiring social distancing in workplaces and hospitality are expected to go, the issue will be left for organisations to work out.

The Welsh government's coronavirus control plan states it will be for organisations to assess the risks, "depending on the nature of the premises and the risks of exposure".

But pubs will no longer have to provide service at tables.
