Five members of staff have tested positive and others have been sent home to self-isolate
The Royal Mail's large Manchester sorting office has undergone an intensive clean following a Covid outbreak.
Five members of staff have tested positive and others have been sent home to self-isolate.
One is said to be seriously ill in hospital.
The Oldham Road depot suffered a bigger outbreak last year.
Bosses have denied reports that staff aren't wearing face masks and that surfaces aren't being cleaned.
Managers insist there is 'sufficient' PPE for staff on site and say cleaning takes place regularly on all shifts.
A Royal Mail Spokesperson said: “Royal Mail takes the health and safety of its colleagues, its customers and the local communities in which we operate very seriously.
Five colleagues have tested positive for coronavirus at the Manchester Mail Centre.
"We wish them a speedy recovery. Some colleagues are also self-isolating.
"We have carried out an intensive clean of the site and have organised additional cleaning of key touch points and all communal areas. We are keeping the CWU (Communication Workers' Union), PHE (Public Health England) and colleagues updated.
"Throughout this crisis, every decision we make puts the health of our people and customers first. We have put in place a range of preventive measures to protect both our customers and our colleagues.
"We were the first UK company to put in place social-distancing measures in relation to parcel delivery. We pioneered contact-free delivery. We are temporarily not handing over our hand-held devices to customers to capture signatures.
"As well as encouraging good hand hygiene, standard ways of working have been revised to ensure that colleagues maintain appropriate social distancing at all times.
"All staff have been briefed about the social distancing measures jointly agreed by local management and the CWU. This has been supplemented with visible reminders such as posters and one-way floor markings."
In August the M.E.N. reported how staff at the depot criticised conditions after number of staff tested positive for COVID-19.
Two workers claimed that bosses had failed to put effective measures in place to protect staff, describing it as a 'shambles'.
It was understood up to 15 members of staff tested positive.
That outbreak prompted what managers called an 'enhanced clean' of the depot.
Royal Mail described the allegations as 'simply not true' at the time.

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."

Re: Royal Mail's Manchester sorting office has intensive clean following Covid outbreak
Here’s an interesting comment made on the Manchester Evening News site from what looks like someone who works there.
Lies
“Deep cleaning ceased last year. Any area where Covid is suspected..staff are told to give it a quick wipe down.
Masks were compulsory..now hardly anyone wears them.
Social distancing is impossible due to the nature of the work. Staff on break times sit together 4/6 people at a table.
Many couples work there...husband isolating at home with Covid symptoms...wife working as normal.
It's a joke!
Is the spokesman related to Hancock?”

We've had quite a few people test positive this year & obviously last. But no intensive clean. The managers in my office are more concerned about budget than masks/distancing. Pretty poor when I read today the country COULD be at the start of a 3rd wave.
