Post office in Penygraig Leanne Wood AM is criticising the Post Office for downgrading services
Plans by the Post Office to move a local branch to a shop is a “downgrading,” according to Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood.

The Post Office plan to shut the existing branch in Tylacelyn Road, Penygraig , and open a new office within Penygraig Stores, also in Tylacelyn Road, in February or March next year.

They say the new premises will be a modern and open-plan retail environment, open seven days a week with an increase of 107 hours a week and have opened a six-week public consultation.

The South Wales Central AM, who lives in Penygraig, has raised objections with the Post Office.

'Communities need public services'

She said: “People in Penygraig are concerned that this downgrading is a first step to eventual removal of all postal services from our town centre.

“Penygraig has already lost its library, faces the loss of its schools, we’ve recently lost our newsagents and now postal services are being downgraded.

“Communities need public services if they are to thrive.”

She added: “The Post Office has said that while there will be longer opening hours, fewer products and services will be available to customers at the proposed new site at Penygraig Stores.

“These include customers not being able to pay by cheque, obtain travel insurance on-the-spot and make use of the popular passport check and send service.

'Make your voices heard'

“While these services will be available in Tonypandy, it would mean an additional journey for many people who currently make regular use of the Post Office in Penygraig.

“Changes and the downgrading of these sorts of facilities are a natural conclusion of the running down of stand-alone post offices by the removal of key business from them, a process that was driven by the former Labour Government and continued under the Tories,” said Ms Wood.

Public consultation is taking place until December 15 and Leanne Wood has urged residents to send in letters opposing the changes, if they have concerns about the proposals.

Posters and leaflets are being displayed in the current branch with details of how people can respond.

Should the move go ahead, the branch would open seven days a week, from 6am to 9.30pm Monday to Saturday and 7am to 9pm on Sunday. This, the Post Office say, would offer an extra 61 hours of Post Office service every week.
How you can have your say

Regional manager Will Russell said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Tonypandy and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."
