The Post Office was likely to have created 'fictitious accounts' and forged documents during the Horizon scandal, a lawyer has claimed.

MPs were told the company used the tactic to dismiss people and shut down thousands of branches.

It comes as Post Office boss Nick Read was given a dressing down by MPs for failing to answer basic questions or provide essential details about the scandal, leaving one MP 'absolutely appalled'.

Dr Neil Hudgell of Hudgell Solicitors, representing subpostmasters, said numerous reports about conduct at the Post Office mean nothing can be 'assumed' any longer

Dr Hudgell said: 'I've got some issues with specific cases when – it may have been three or four years ago – I thought this wasn't possible, but forgery of documentation and the creation of fictitious accounts to dismiss people are firmly in my sights as more likely to happen than not.

'You can't assume anything now when it comes to the behaviour that's gone on over the last 20 years.

'Every week there's a new revelation – and one good thing that's going to come from the dramatisation is the increasing number of whistleblowers that are prepared to come out and spill the beans where they didn't necessarily before have the ability to do that.'

Last week it emerged that the Post Office's fraud team received cash bonuses for each postmaster convicted.

Long-serving employee Gary Thomas told the inquiry that an incentive scheme including 'bonus objectives' influenced his behaviour as an investigator.
