The closed branch will be moved to temporary premises 'as soon as possible'

The Taunton town centre Post Office will close next week, with a brand-new counter set to open inside a major shop in the town soon.

The branch on North Street, Taunton, will close next Wednesday (October 20) as a result of building work that will be undertaken at the site.

The organisation has confirmed plans are in place to move this branch into alternative premises in Canon Street "as soon as possible".

The Post Office has also confirmed a brand-new counter will open in the near future in the WH Smith store on Fore Street, with plans for new signage for the counter having been logged with Somerset West and Taunton Council.

The organisation said the plans for this new counter were "already in the pipeline" and that it is not a replacement service for the closing branch.

A Post Office spokesperson said: “Taunton Post Office needs to move from its current location due to building work being undertaken. The branch is due to close on 20 October. We are planning to move to alternative premises in Canon Street as soon as possible as we know how important a Post Office is to the community.

“Work is also nearly complete for a brand-new Post Office counter inside the WHSmith store. This new branch was already in the pipeline and it is not a replacement for Taunton.

“Alternative branches in the area also include Station Road, Mountfields, Galmington and Priorswood.”

The date for the opening of the new counter inside WH Smith is still being finalised.

The new Post Office services will be available seven days a week, with opening hours being Monday to Saturday, 8.30am–5.30pm, and 10.30am – 4.30pm on Sundays - a total of 60 hours' service a week.

The organisation says the new branch aims to offer even more convenience to Post Office customers by extending the availability of Post Offices services in the area.

Max Sims, Post Office Strategic Partner Manager, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for customers to pay their bills, withdraw cash from their bank accounts, and send and collect their mail at a time and place that suits them best.

“We know how important our services are to customers, and we are confident that this brand-new Post Office alongside the other branches in the area will ensure that people in this area of Taunton have easy access to our services.”

Post Office services will be offered from a low-screened, open-plan Post Office counter that is integrated into the retail counter, enabling customers to carry out a wide range of Post Office transactions alongside retail purchases.

This new branch will offer customers a wide range of Post Office services, from posting letters and parcels to collecting and returning online shopping items.

Customers will also be able to take advantage of a wide range of banking services including cash withdrawals and balance enquiries for customers of all the main UK banks.
