Nelson Post Office might have to move due to takeaway influx

Staff who run the Post Office in Manchester Road have objected to plans to convert a shop into a takeaway

Bosses at a Post Office in Nelson have revealed they are considering moving the outlet because of an influx of new takeaways in the town centre.

Pendle Borough Council has this week approved Mohammad Rana's planning application to change the use of a unit in Place de Creil, off Manchester Road, from retail to serving hot food. The premises was originally a Fultons supermarket which closed last year and it is currently occupied by Stardezerts which is set to move to another outlet across the road.

In a public objection to the plans, published online, staff at the Post Office, situated at the other end of Place de Creil, claimed the new takeaway would cause issues for elderly people.

"We are not happy with this; one more takeaway in (the) town centre," Post Office staff said.

"It is going to cause serious parking problems for senior citizens who use (the) Post Office as we already have taxis and delivery drivers for Greggs using the car park and they do cause problems by parking in front of other cars.

"There are enough food places in the town centre. We will consider moving the town centre Post Office away should it be needed."

Despite the public objection, Lancashire County Council's highways officers raised no concerns about parking.

Assistant Engineer Janet Simpson said in a report: "The development site is a town centre location with ready access to short and long-term parking together with the public transport interchange."

In a report recommending approval planning officers highlighted that "the proposed development is not located near to a facility which is primarily used by children and as such is unlikely to adversely affect child obesity levels".

The planning report states: "An objection has been received to the application on the grounds of shortage of parking facilities. There is however no evidence to support this comment.

"The location of the site in the town centre of Nelson means that there are more off-road car parking facilities available than in most other locations within the borough. The site is also located close to Nelson Interchange offering rail and bus services to Colne, Burnley and further afield."

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."
