A post office has been denied a licence to sell extra-strength beers and ciders after breaching its licence.
Council officers found Hounslow Heath Post Office supervisor Mrs Balraj Kaur Kular, had been selling drinks of seven or eight per cent alcohol volume, during a May inspection.
After hearing the 66-year-old didn’t know the limits of the licence, a council licensing panel rejected an application to sell alcohol at six per cent or above.
Promoted as “Polish beer 99p”, Mrs Kular was selling eight per cent K Cider, seven per cent Zubra and two six per cent Perla beers, the panel heard on August 24.
Not present at the hearing was licence holder Isaac Appiah-Kubi.
When asked what Mrs Kular’s financial involvement in the shop is, her daughter, Chanel, answered only that her mother “likes to serve the community”.
The daughter claimed Mrs Kular was not aware of the alcohol limit when she took over from her predecessor.
Councillor Tony Louki, a licensing panel member, said: "I am sorry, you seem like decent people. I do understand the serving community, the Oyster cards and snacks, but drink is a different thing these days.”
The panel could have reduced the Post Office’s licence limit to 5.5 per cent volume, but that would not have been fair, Cllr Louki added.
A man speaking on behalf of Mrs Kular said at the end of the meeting: “We’ve lost 30 to 35 per cent of our customers.
“We’ll see if we can sustain the business for that long, maybe we'll have to shut down the business."

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."
