Police standing guard outside cordoned off post office in Wavertree as injured robbery victim taken to hospital.

A van driver has been taken to hospital after being struck with a hammer by balaclava wearing thugs during a cash box robbery at a post office today.

Police were this lunchtime still standing guard outside the cordoned off Lawrence Road post office in Wavertree after the sickening armed robbery.

Police said two masked men confronted a postal worker around 9.45am and attacked the male victim with a hammer before fleeing with a cash box.

The van driver was struck on the arm and has been taken to hospital.

The post office van targeted by the raiders can be seen outside the premises and is included within the cordon.

Confirming the violent raid, a Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "We're appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a post office in Wavertree today, Friday 21 May.

"At around 9.45am, it was reported that two men wearing balaclavas confronted a post office worker on Lawrence Road.

"The offenders are said to have hit the staff member on the arm with a hammer, before making off with an empty cash box.

"It is reported that the offenders drove away in the direction of Picton Road. The staff member was taken to hospital as a precaution."

Police said CCTV, forensic and witness enquiries are ongoing, and detectives would like to hear from anyone who can assist the investigation.

Detective Inspector Gary Thomas said: “Key workers, including Post Office workers, continue to help keep our communities going throughout challenging times.

“It’s hard to believe someone would confront a staff member in such a violent way, and we will do all we can to find those who did and put them before the courts.

"If you saw anything suspicious in the area this morning, or have dashcam footage from Lawrence Road or Picton Road around 9.45am, please get in touch as soon as possible."

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."
