Put note on door asking postman to phone me - am I expecting too much?
I live in a block of flats and the doorbells don't work - seems that asking the landlord to fix them may be asking too much.
So, I was expecting a delivery today (requires signature) and put a note on the door explaining that the bell doesn't work and asking the postman to call my home number.
I see now that he just put a redelivery card through and left. Second time this has happened, FWIW.
I realize that Royal Mail staff are busy. Am I demanding too much by requesting this? I always do it for Amazon/DPD/Hermes/etc. and they've always called me when they're outside.
Not sure if it's worth complaining or not. I don't want to be an ass here - just a bit put out that I was in to receive my parcel and now I'll have to get it redelivered to my local Post Office in order to get it (no point in getting it sent back here if the bell is broken).
Edit:
Another reason I'm narked about this is because the last time this same thing happened (last month) my package, which was nothing valuable, somehow disappeared into the system when I tried to get it redelivered. Not at my local Post Office, not at the delivery office either, and I'm currently having to deal with the eBay claims procedure - while the tracking shows that it's waiting for collection at the delivery office (it isn't).

RM aren't like other couriers in the sense that we don't phone customers,we aren't paid per parcel so less pressure on us to get rid of a parcel like other couriers.
The postie would have to ring you on his/her personal phone, and ultimately is breaking protocol and putting himself in trouble if he did ring.
So personally I would never ring anyone but it's not our responsibility too.

To follow your request Royal Mail posties would have to use their own phones, without any way of getting a reimbursement. There is also a Data Acces issue as they would have to give you personal information (unless they block their number).
The PDA we use has a phone feature BUT the numbers we can call are limited.
Ultimately it's the personal choice of the Postie, and whilst you can always lodge a complaint, in this case, the postie did nothing wrong.
So you aren't expecting too much, but you are asking for something that is not officially recognised or endorsed in Royal Mail, and in most cases, it will cost the postie real money to acquiesce to your request.

Re: Put note on door asking postman to phone me - am I expecting too much?
Unfortunately this is indicative of the Mobile Phone Attitude. Everyone expects everybody to be in constant Real Time Communication with Everyone else! Instantly!!
It's exaggerated due to the increase in FREE calls ANYTIME contracts. Do you remember when you actually had to pay to call someone? You made sure it was important (Admitedly not all mobiles are Free).
I wouldn't feel too upset if your Postie doesn't phone you, I ignore "Just popped out back in 5 mins" notices, does she expect me to wait? "I'm in the Garden around the back" notices, does she expect me to go hunting for her? And especially "Please ring 07************ I can be there in 5 mins"
As mentioned we don't get paid by the ammount of parcels we deliver (although perhaps we should) that's why you see other Couriers running up and down the street knocking on doors like some demented game of Knock Down Ginger. Or worse lobbing parcels over fences, or onto roofs!

Re: Put note on door asking postman to phone me - am I expecting too much?
Sorry but the more 'customer engagement' we enter into the longer, more complicated and drawn out our day becomes so as a rule, and besides having to use my own phone, I don't phone customers. Expectations are skewed by the way we differ from parcel couriers who don't have potentially 800+ addresses to deliver to every day. Oh and I dodge Ring doorbell camera things like the plague too because, as I've said before, it's an invitation to waste your time, as bypassers see it, shouting at a door, wasting your time telling a laggy poor quality voice on the other end as to why you cant just hide it somewhere and their neighbour isn't in, no, I've no f***ing idea why they aren't in when they normally are at this time.
Sorry Dav I know this sounds like we don't give a proverbial, we don't enjoy letting our punters down but we are absolutely at breaking point atm. Best thing to do is cultivate a relationship with your postie and see where your needs and theirs can meet.
You waiting on vinyl? I've pretty much had to give up collecting, the prices are unbelievable atm.

Re: Put note on door asking postman to phone me - am I expecting too much?
Thanks for all the replies, folks.
I understand your perspective. I'd never be as demanding as to put up a note asking for the postie to wait for me to get back, or anything like that, for what it's worth. A couple of years ago, I put up a note asking for the postie to ring me and he did.
But yeah, I think I'm gonna just buy myself one of those battery-powered wireless doorbells. I shouldn't need to, but my landlord doesn't seem to give a crap, no matter how many times myself and others have complained - and moving isn't an option at present.
The previous time this happened was over an item from eBay worth three quid that will fit in a small envelope btw. For some reason, the seller insisted on sending it signed for. I think I am gonna put in a complaint about the thing going missing in the system when I requested redelivery to my local Post Office though. It's not there, and it's not at the delivery office, so god knows where it ended up. So I'm worried about whether this one's gonna suffer the same fate.

Re: Put note on door asking postman to phone me - am I expecting too much?
When I was more wet behind the ears than I am now, I was out delivering parcels and found a note asking me to call. Like an idiot, I did. The guy explained he would be home in 20 minutes and would I still be around? No. Could I leave it with the shop across the road? Ok. Shop across the road: don’t know him, refuse receipt. I call him and say I’m going to card him. Wait, wait. Here’s my door code, could you just drop it inside? OK. He didn’t tell me about his dog. I just managed to slam the door in its face. I will never, ever call a customer again.

It's a two way street.
I call customers, but i fully agree with the posties that choose not to.

Just like these video doorbells - they create more hassle for us. I'm finding myself pressing them less and less these days.ArtG wrote: ↑25 Nov 2021, 15:20When I was more wet behind the ears than I am now, I was out delivering parcels and found a note asking me to call. If it's a phone number to access business premises, I may call it; but not with residential households.
