I ordered an item from Aliexpress and paid the VAT at source, making a total price of £18.00. It arrived today without any problems, but I was expecting a VAT declaration or some other marking on the package to show that VAT had been paid. How does Royal Mail determine whether VAT has been paid or not? The parcel is marked with the contents value of $8.
Has anyone paid the VAT to Aliexpress and subsequently had a Royal Mail handling charge, plus VAT applied? If so, how did you resolve this?

Re: Aliexpress package marking for VAT
The system has just changed so there is a chance no one on here is up to snuff on the intricate details, but I seem to remember that VAT etc is all done electronically and it's up to Customs to check VAT, not RM. RM only raise charges when directed to do so by HM Customs.Mickeyluv wrote: ↑08 Nov 2021, 12:44I ordered an item from Aliexpress and paid the VAT at source, making a total price of £18.00. Thanks for the reply. I'll see if there's anything on the HMRC site.

Re: Aliexpress package marking for VAT
I've just read through this and it explains why the package didn't attract any further charges. Stuck on the back is a very loose interpretation of the CN22 declaration. It doesn't comply with the official version and doesn't say 'Customs Declaration', but has the required information that would be present on the correct form. Maybe there's a little flexibility so long as the information is present in some form.
