Service Update

Wednesday 23 March 2022

Movement of mail through our network
Royal Mail operates an air, rail and road network to move letters and parcels between our distribution hubs, mail processing centres and delivery offices around the UK. Here we let you know about any significant issues in our logistics operation.

Some delays to our services travelling by sea to Belfast are expected this week due to reduced shipping availability. We’re doing all we can to restore our normal services but some mail may arrive slightly later than expected.

Air
Last night the flight from East Midlands to Belfast was cancelled due to technical issues with the aircraft. Mail was sent on via the road/ferry network. However, as a result, a small amount of mail due for delivery today in Northern Ireland may arrive later than anticipated.

Rail
Our rail network operated to schedule over the last 24-hours.

Road
Last night not all mail was able to travel on the scheduled service from Warrington to the National Distribution Centre (NDC) due to capacity issues. This mail left on a later running service, and as a result it's possible that some mail due for delivery today in parts of the Midlands, South West, South Wales, Northern Ireland, the South East and London may arrive later than expected.

A vehicle travelling from Preston Mail Centre to the NDC arrived late last night due to closures on the M6. As a result, a small amount of mail posted yesterday in the BB, FY, LA and PR postcode areas for delivery today in other parts of the UK, may arrive later than planned.

The late arrival of a trailer into London's Princess Royal Distribution Centre last night resulted in the late departure of the scheduled service to Cardiff Mail Centre. As a result, a small amount of mail posted in parts of the South East and London for delivery today in the CF, LD and NP postcode areas may arrive later than anticipated.

Mail Centres
The mail centres below reported not all mail was processed or despatched to schedule over the last 24-hours, and as a result some mail may be delivered slightly later than expected.

Birmingham Mail Centre: Some mail posted yesterday in B, HR and WR postcode areas for delivery today in other parts of the UK.
Tyneside Mail Centre Some mail posted yesterday in other parts of the UK for delivery today in the DH, DL, NE, SR and TS postcode areas.
Northern Ireland Mail Centre: Some mail posted yesterday in other parts of the UK for delivery today in the BT postcode area.

Deliveries today

Deliveries are operating as normal across most of the country today. We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as COVID-related self isolation, high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors. In those cases we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers. We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive.

We're sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. We will regularly update customers on the offices most impacted here:

Caldicot DO (NP26)
Glastonbury DO (BA6 and BA16)
Kittybrewster DO (AB24 and AB25)
Newbury DO (RG14 and RG20)
Wantage DO (OX12)

Our air network operated to schedule over the last 24 hours with the following exceptions. A flight from East Midlands Airport to Aberdeen Airport was cancelled last night due to a technical issue with the aircraft. Mail from the cancelled flight was transferred onto the Edinburgh flight for onward dispatch to Aberdeen, but this subsequently led to the late departure of the Edinburgh flight. As a result, some mail posted on Wednesday in the North and Midlands regions of England and North Wales, due for delivery today to addreses in Central and North East Scotland, may arrive later than expected.

Rail
Our rail network operated to schedule over the last 24 hours.

Road
Our road network operated to schedule over the last 24 hours with the following exception. A machine breakdown at our National Distribution Centre last night meant not all mail was processed in time for scheduled for onward despatch. As a result, a small quantity of Tracked Returns parcels posted on Wednesday from across the UK, due for delivery today to various business customers, may arrive later than expected.

Mail Centres
Our mail centres all operated to schedule over the last 24 hours.

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."
