Advice on hours.
Hi there.
I've recently started as a postie on a 30 hour contract which equates to 1560 hours per annum. However my contract says 2080 hours. I don't really understand this pro rata shite, so if someone could break it down in layman's terms that would be great. I'm assuming that my monthly wage will be 1560 hours x hourly rate ÷ 12.
I'm just so miffed as to why the contract doesn't just state what exactly the situation is. I.e £20 per hour 07:30 - 17:00 Mon-Fri. Or is this too easy. It's like cloak and daggers trying to get this information. I like the job, but Jesus, for a communication company, they certainly don't communicate too well.
Cheers.

Re: Advice on hours.
2080 hours per annum is what you will actually be working, so you will be required to work 40 hours a week. So 2080 divided by 40 x your hourly rate gives you your monthly pay before deductions.

I assume 2080 is the full time equivalent.

Re: Advice on hours.
I've been doing a bit of research. Basically the 2080 is what full-time hours are based on a 40 hour week.
I'm on a 30 hour contract which is 1560 per annum.
The difference is nearly £8000. What has me completly baffled is to why on earth would you advertise a job with a salary of £30,000 and draw up a contract stating that. When in reality that's full time 40 hours. Why not be crystal clear and say your salary for 30 hours is £22,000.

Re: Advice on hours.
That's correct. I'm just confused as to why they wouldn't just advertise the job as to what hours you are actually contracted to work.
Maybe I'm looking at this wrong, but the contract states the wage is £30,000 for 2080 hours.
However, in reality the hours are 1560, which works out at £22,000. Why?
Again I maybe missing something hence the questions.
Cheers.

Re: Advice on hours.
I joined RM in 2012 and back then the contract stated the annual salary was the full time rate, but the section on my hours stated the 30 that the advert was for. Then again, the advert was for a different location in a different county that had a slightly different spelling!
I think it is just the senseless way that RM do things, although misleading people could be a reason (or just a fortunate side-effect).

Re: Advice on hours.
Thanks for replies, everyone.
I received an email outlining that the annual wage stated in the contract is for full-time 40 hours.
I'm not going to give this anymore of my time but I'm still completely bemused as to why in a written contract in black and white it states that the hours are 2080 per annum for a £30,000 salary.
Yet, in reality, it's 1560 hours per annum for £22,000.
Live and learn, I suppose. (I'm not even going to get started on the other issues)

Sounds like they’ve sent you the wrong contract by mistake!

Re: Advice on hours.
Pretty certain mine said similar in the past when it was a 37 hour contract with paid breaks but the job offer was for only 25 hours. The RM way seems to be to try and totally confuse it's staff.Broady wrote: ↑14 Dec 2023, 21:32That's correct. Re: Advice on hours.
Usually companies that do this sh!t(pro rata language), advertise like this because if they revealed the upfront wage for part time in laymens terms, it wouldnt look as attractive & u wouldn't apply. But I think, I think, Royal Mail have a good wage for part time, still calculating myself and waiting for first pay. (But we do have the lamer contract, compared to fulltimers)
