Earlier this week An Post attributed the pandemic and increased online shopping as the reason for delayed deliveries however another reason behind the delays has now emerged.

Hundreds of social media users and concerned customers have been contacting the postal service over the last number of days regarding late deliveries of packages.

Some customers in Cork were told that even though their packages had arrived at the Dublin hub, they could not be sent to the mailing centre in Cork as they were 'too busy'.

Customers have been left frustrated with the service as many paid extra for next day or 2-3 day delivery, however due to delays with An Post this has not happened.

In March, the Cork Mail Centre in Little Island closed with the loss of over 200 jobs as part of An Post's plan to switch investment in to its e-commerce network across the city and county.

Earlier this week, the national service asked customers to 'bare with' them as they have seen a huge surge in packages due to increased online shopping this year.

According to their website, mail deliveries are operating as normal however parcel deliveries have been affected by the increased volume of packages going through their centres.

A spokesperson for An Post told CorkBeo that they have never before seen the volume of parcels that they are currently dealing with.

"Nationally Covid 19 has accelerated the move to online shopping, there is an early rush on Christmas shopping and a move to general shopping eonline due to the Level 5 retail restrictions.

"An Post has never seen parcel volumes like we are currently handling. We’re delivering more than 2.5 million parcels a week; upwards of 400, 000 per day.

"That is more 130 per cent up on the same time last year. The same circumstances affecting our customers in Cork as everywhere else.

"Everything is taking longer to process and to get out on delivery and we are asking customers for their patience. We will deliver your parcels so please bear with us as we’re working to deliver your mail and parcels. We’re out delivering in the evenings and at weekends too.

"We have 5,000 expert delivery staff many of them based in and around Cork. They are all equipped with the latest mobile technology and they know every inch of the city and county, better than anyone.

"We’re seeing a mobilisation of An Post’s workforce like never before and we assure customers that we will get your parcels to you, just please, be patient. If you normally get your items next day it may take 2 -3 days to get your parcel.

"In our local offices in Cork were are working safely, working with staggered start times, socially distanced work-spaces and in accordance with the all guidelines.

"But the basic message is ‘Bear with us we will get your mail to you.’"
