According to residents, the driver of the DPD delivery van driver collapsed and died.

Police have cordoned off three residential streets, including Handley Street, where forensic tent has been erected next to the van.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to an incident in Handley Street, Horden, at 11.14am this morning.

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."

Police in County Durham confirmed a man was arrested after a man believed to be a DPD delivery driver was found dead. Emergency services were called to an incident in Horden yesterday morning

Police have arrested a suspect after a man believed to be a DPD delivery driver was found dead by his van.

The man could not be saved by emergency services after they were called to the scene in Horden, County Durham, at 11.30am yesterday.

A Durham Police spokesperson yesterday: "Police have launched an investigation following an incident in the Handley Street area, of Horden at around 11.30am this morning.

"Officers and paramedics attended but sadly, a man was pronounced dead at the scene. One man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

"The area is currently cordoned off and officers are expected to remain at the scene for some time."

Forensic officers have since been seen working in a tent next to a DPD delivery van and police cordoned off nearby roads.

Local reports say a toy car was left in the middle of the street as police investigated.

The Northern Echo reported one resident as describing the incident as "absolutely terrible".

The Mirror has approached DPD for comment.

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Rudd, of Durham Constabulary, said: "This investigation is in the very early stages, and we are working to establish exactly what has happened.

"I would like to thank the local community for their patience, understanding and co-operation while we deal with the incident."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called to an incident in Handley Street, Horden, at 11.14am (yesterday) morning.

"We dispatched a community first responder, a clinical team leader, a rapid response paramedic, an ambulance crew, a specialist paramedic, and an officer."
