The post office’s 2021 financial results are pending but it reported a pre-tax loss of $779 million in 2020 following losses of $153 million in 2019 and $276 million in 2018.

Most Canadians are good if Canada Post cuts back mail delivery to three days a week, say in house Privy Council polling.

Blacklock’s Reporter says the Liberals in the past six years have spent $4.5 million polling questions about Canada Post, records show.

The Privy Council in a $2.8 million poll last December 12 asked, “Canada Post loses money every year and would need to make significant cuts to break even. Do you believe the government should continue to provide financial support to Canada Post to cover annual losses or should Canada Post be restructured in a way to break even?”

Findings showed a majority of respondents, 54%, recommended “Canada Post be restructured in a way to break even.” Approval rates ranged as high as 59% in Atlantic Canada followed by British Columbia, Ontario and Québec (54%), Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba (52%.)

The post office’s 2021 financial results are pending, but it reported a pre-tax loss of $779 million in 2020 following losses of $153 million in 2019 and $276 million in 2018. Combined pre-tax profits totaled $388 million in the period from 2014 to 2017.

The results of the “restructure” survey were detailed in an Inquiry Of Ministry tabled in the Commons. The information was requested by Conservative MP Tony Baldinelli (Niagara Falls, Ont.).

The Privy Council asked, “Do you support or oppose Canada Post making the following changes to reduce its operating costs: a) close rural post offices; b) move remaining door-to-door home deliveries to community mailboxes; c) reduce the frequency of mail delivery from every day to three times a week; d) increase the cost of stamps; e) use more automation to replace Canada Post workers.”

Reduction of delivery days was the most popular option favoured by 52% nationwide. Three times a week delivery was most popular in Québec, endorsed by 59% of respondents, followed by Ontario (53%0, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan (52% support), Atlantic Canada (47%) and Alberta (43%) support).

A total 48% supported elimination of doorstep mail delivery. Forty percent supported further increases in stamp rates. A total 29% supported job cuts through automation. Closures of country postal outlets were the least popular option, opposed by 72% of Canadians surveyed.

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."
