U.S postal service

Post by pieoftheday »

Just caught part of a documentary on the U.S postal sevice, seems it's been ballsed up same as here, destroying the universal service, ie no next day 1st class, instead a 3 day service, automation/less staff, more profit for the privatised parts of the business and the last leg that needs bodies on the ground shafted like us. Ah well at least we're not alone eh

If anyone wants to read about the experiences of a fellow USPS comrade in arms (City Carrier Assistant - postie!),
'Mel Carriere' posts articles here: https://toughnickel.com/@melcarriere

and blogs here: http://melcarriere.blogspot.com/ (not https so your browser may throw up a warning)

USPS staff experience the same day to day and strategic issues as we do by the looks of it....

Thanks for those links :thumbup
I like their writing style. I've just read their piece about working through the first lockdown and it really resonated. Have bookmarked the links for later.

As we're constantly told letters are declining and therefore make little profit, does anyone think it likely that letter delivery will be split from RM as a none profit service?

Not in the short term, who would finance and run a non-profit service? You'd still need a massive network that could cover every single
address in the UK even if it was say a delivery olny three times a week. Wasn't it Whistl who tried and failed even though
they cherry picked a city centre location?

IMHO can see eventually that if people still want mail it all gets delivered to say a central street, village or town location
and you have to pick it up yerself or pay a premium if you want a home delivery. But think it'll be in a few years yet
when the digital natives who have grown up getting their communications online will be approaching their
middle age/retirement years, so all the catalogues, Radio Times, etc. that the current cohort of retirees get will
all be online thus decimating the mass mailing market. Come to think of it, I'm probably in that category!!!

I imagine RM would find a way to offload it back to the government at no cost , I give it 2 years

TNT/Whistl have tried several times to the point I think it's an act purely for keeping up appearances that DSA is working as intended (other companies use us as a crutch until they can get their own service set-up, not two decades later 'The Delivery Company' sorting business mail and then leaving delivery to us).
Any Questions?
Yeah, how do I get out of this chickenshit outfit?

Rural deliveries you would think are most likely to be tampered with first, with rising fuel costs and eco agendas there is a better political stance to be able to enforce any change. But saying that I don't think any change will happen until Royal Mail are on their knees financially.

Uh yeah, but USPS mailmen get paid a lot more than we do.
