Amazon starts recruiting for hundreds of jobs in Hull with a £1,500 sign on bonus

New Amazon depot in Melton starts hiring staff with a big bonus and full training

Giant retailer Amazon has started recruiting the first of hundreds of staff it hopes to hire in Hull with sign-on bonuses of £1,500.

The move comes as the first of the huge new storage and delivery depots in Melton start operating.

The global giant is taking over a vast plot of land on the Melton West Business Park off the A63 near North Ferriby.

Some nearby residents have been fierce opponents of the scale of the £150m development, in particular the larger of the two new depots. The first appears near to completion and is now carrying the Amazon branding.

The Amazon site is expected to become one of the biggest employers in the region, rivalling Siemens Gamesa in East Hull for the scale of its workforce.

And now Amazon has started recruiting “Sortation Operatives” to work at the Melton site.

Describing itself as “one of the world’s best employers”, Amazon is also offering £1,500 bonuses if people start before the end of October.

It says night shifts covering 3am to 11.30am and “hybrid shifts” from 6am to 12.30am are available. Staff will get £11 an hour for working night shifts an £10 for day shifts.

The company’s recruitment form Adecco also says it has vacancies for three, four and five day working weeks. Find out how to apply for Amazon jobs here.

It is thought the initial recruitment drive is focused on the logistics centre which has now been built by local firm Wykeland. Further large scale recruitment will come for the second phase "retail fulfilment centre" which could be operational in about 18-months if it can clear planning hurdles.

It comes as Amazon confirmed it is also hiring 150 seasonal workers at its delivery depot in Valletta Street in Hull ahead of Christmas.

The Amazon investment is expected to be a huge boost to the local economy, creating up to 1,500 direct jobs and a further 500 in the supply chain.

However, there has been opposition from residents in the popular village of North Ferriby. They are concerned about increases in traffic and the local environment.

And last week there was also opposition from Natural England to the proposed new complex, which would have a total gross floorspace of 186,940 square metres - big enough to cover seven football pitches.

The second phase of the development is currently going through planning with East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Natural England say the proposal on land zoned for employment, would negatively impact on internationally-designated protected wildlife and wetland habitats along the Humber.

A neighbouring site at Melton which Amazon plans to develop into a huge logistics centre. Some ground work has already taken place but the full project is to be decided by East Riding of Yorkshire planning committee

In particular, Natural England says it is concerned about the potential loss of habitat for the Eurasian curlew, a rare bird species officially listed as being at risk of extinction.

Despite the formal objection, the agency does accept measures put forward by developer Wykeland for extra woodland planting and acoustic fencing will mitigate the impact of lighting and noise during the construction period and once the building is operational.

If planning councillors decide to support the scheme, it also calls for a condition requiring wider greenspace buffer zones and extra noise reduction measures to limit the impact on the Yorkshire Wolds National Trail - a 79-mile public right of way which ends at the Hessle foreshore and passes through a woodland known as Long Plantation which lies alongside the development site.

Long Plantation also provides a boundary between houses at the western end of North Ferriby.

A date for the application to be considered by East Riding's planning committee has yet to be set.
