Royal Mail-owned GLS Belgium has opened a new delivery depot in Wijnegem that is to handle deliveries into Antwerp.
Capable of processing up to 10,500 parcels a day, the 5,735 square metre site will employ 26 members of staff. It is hoped that the new site will relieve pressure on the Puurs depot nearby.
“Our package quantities have increased significantly in recent months,” said Luc De Schrijver, managing director at GLS Belux. “Our continuous investments in our network are the cornerstone for high-quality deliveries and enhance our service to our customers and their customers. Thanks to the new location, we are once again shortening our already competitive delivery times.”
The new delivery depot will shorten last and first mile delivery routes, ultimately reducing carbon emissions, and fitting in with the GLS KlimaProtect strategy. Thanks to the shorter routes, many will be viable to run electric vehicles on them in future, thereby reducing carbon emissions even further.
