Lower Earnings Limit - Section C

11 Mar 2020, 16:58

Just had this from the Pensions helpline......minus the Indexed Lower Earnings Deduction applying (which for a full-time employee is £3,328 increased each April with effect from 1 April 2014 by the increase in the Retail Prices Index for the 12 months up to the preceding September).

This seems to suggest that LEL was £3328 on 1st April 2014 and it has increased each April since then. However, I can't find any information pertaining to what that increase has been for the past 5 years.

Any ideas? I thought it was still £3328.

The 2018 Pension Review : update booklet dated February 2018 shows in the Section C illustrations an updated LED of £3,753 as at April 2018. The April 2018 figure would have been known in advance of publication as it was based on the RPI rate for September 2017.

You can check this out - it’s easy enough to update the 2014 figure of £3,328 by the RPI rates for each September since. Alternatively, just update the already published figure for April 2018, referred to above to get the latest LED’s !

The RPI for September 2018 was 3.3% so updated LED for April 2019 £3,877. RPI for September 2019 was 2.4% so updated LED for April 2020 £3,970 - allows for rounding.
