I have a chance of coming out of delivery to go to Mail Centre Distributions advice.

Im in delivery on a 30hr contract, recently ive thought about coming out of this to work in the mail centre or at least get a foot in the door in the mail centre. After going down to speak to someone recently ive had a phone call today and have been offered a job in collections. Now the snag is its a 20 hr contract which is not really ideal and I think the hours are 3pm til 7pm which is fine. My question is, is it ok to make a contract step backwards as ive heard once your down at the mail centre then there are opportunities for other things where as in delivery (where I currently am) there is none to really progress? Also is there decent opportunities for overtime?

You have to weigh it up on balance between the two, if you have little prospect of getting a duty of your own or more hours in deliveries because of limited seniority then you might as well make the move to collections. In terms of making up the shortfall in hours 10 isn't a lot and you could always work OT in deliveries in the morning.

Is collections really a safe option? isn't there the chance that RM will move all but bulk collections onto delivery?

That's been rumoured for years. I can't see it happening any time soon not in a dedicated collection hub, you have businesses and post offices that all require differing pickup times. One small area could exceed the capability of one person on a hybrid delivery/collection.

In smaller Dos though collection could wel be combined into deliveries if they can move the pipeline back and have postie start at 9am.

What is the work like (collections?). I know a couple of posties from my DO that have done it on OT and have said its really nice work, no strain on the body like you get in deliveries but the contracts are only 20 hrs. I have actually weighed up that I could work 2 days in delivery 15/16hrs) and do collections on top 3pm til 7pm. Id have to make sure I was done by 2.20pm and may try and get a monday and tuesday in deliveries. Also is it Saturday work? I rejected the collections job but they want me to work OT down there which I think Ill do after the Xmas pressure and do my days off. this way if I do like it then I can make the transition into collections next year. 30-33hrs a week is enough for me each week.

Used to do 26-30 hours on collections, nearly 50 pick-ups a day and I really liked it, doing a bit of O/T at the DO did help when I needed it.
