Are there still four MDECs ? Or have any closed because technology has got better ?
... I assume handwriting has not improved

There are three permanent MDECs - Plymouth, Stoke and Failsworth (Manchester). I think Stoke is now the biggest of the three centres.

A temporary MDEC operates at Doxford (Sunderland) in December.

And no.. handwriting has not improved, but the machines are supposedly more clever and can read more hieroglyphics!
