100 years of Official Mail Transport

The GPO started using its own motorised mail transport (as opposed to contractors, etc.) in May 1914. Twenty motor cycles with sidecars were bought in 1914 and they were used to replace postmen on horseback and some rural offices. After the first World War ended, the GPO starting buying vans for mail deliveries and replaced most of the contractors transporting mail between HPOs to SSOs and SPSOs, and between sorting offices and railway stations. To mark this centenary, the Post Office Vehicle Club is holding a Post Office Vehicle Gathering at the Milton Keynes Museum next Sunday, 27th April between 11 am and 4.30 pm. We haven't got any vehicles from 1914 but we will have a nice selection of GPO and Post Office vehicles including two Morris-Commercial J 100 cubic footers, six Morris Minors including one with rubber wings from 1954, a Morris-Commercial LC5 mailvan, a line-up of telegram motor cycles including several BSA Bantams.

Remember the Good Old Days and some of the vehicles you used to drive or ride. Reduced rate admission for RM employees.
