For comparison, in 1984, as a hotel worker, I was paid £42 per week for 39hours, overtime was a standard on every shift and rarely if ever paid.frank doyle wrote: ↑22 Jun 2024, 09:23Hi

Started in 1984 my first pay packet was £63 for the first week

That was £63 after tax with no allowances for a 43 hour week

Always remember my first wage as a cadet in 1980 which was £43.86 at 17 years old - felt rich .

I seem to recall when I joined in 1980 as an 18 year old it was a basic of £83 a week for 43 hours. Quite a jump for me as I was on £20 as an apprentice patternmaker before the company went bust

Slightly off course, but at 16, I worked all day on a Saturday in the Co-op for about £11.85

1982 I was on Basic of £86 plus shift allowances and d2d money + extras for Rebate bulk and other bulk postings.. 43 Hour week

Small terrace house in Brighton was about 6 x postman’s salary now it’s about 15 times.
