I’m a postman of 6 months and am still unsure if it’s correct procedure to be shown each new walk you are given or just given a map and good luck?!

Welcome.
As you have been in for 6 months you are a 'trained postie'. Prepping/tying up ect
Run of the mill walks, someone in the know if you're lucky should show you some pointers, if you are really really really lucky you may go out with someone for the day but that is very rare.
Rurals and firms yes you should be shadowed for at least a day.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
