An arrest had been made following a call to police by an eagle eyed postmaster who saw a man fit a device to a cash machine at his post office last night.

The man watched on as the device was fitted which allows bank cards to be cloned, with the offender obtaining money from unaware customers using the machine.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Waldram from Nottinghamshire Police said: "This was an excellent spot by the postal worker and speedy work by officers. The man saw that the cash machine was being tampered with and rang officers immediately.

"Officers swiftly attended the post office in Beech Avenue, Sherwood Rise following the report of a suspicious man yesterday at around 6.30pm.

"The caller stayed on the phone and was able to point out the man to officers. He initially tried to run from the scene, but he was eventually caught further down the road.

"A 34-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of possession of an article for use in fraud. He remains in police custody.

"We'd like to remind people how to take care when withdrawing cash. Please do shield the keypad when typing in your PIN and you should always examine the machine before use.

"If anything looks out of place or it has any parts which appear to have been added, do not use it and report your suspicions to the bank.

"If the machine fails to return your card or any cash you have withdrawn, you should contact the police on our non-emergency number 101 and your bank to inform them."

A useful tip, if you have a banking app, you can lock or cancel your card if it's swallowed by a cash machine, preventing further use.
