WREXHAM’S Royal Mail sorting office could undergo a major revamp under new plans which have been put forward.
The company has entered proposals to demolish a number of existing structures at the facility on Regent Street in the town.
A new 475 square metre extension would then be added to the main building with car parking arrangements also being adjusted to improve safety at the site.
Architects acting on behalf of the Royal Mail said the scheme had been drawn up as the facility was in need of a “significant investment”.
In a statement submitted to Wrexham Council, they said: “The brief is to simplify operations by demolishing standalone buildings and building an extension to the main building to improve efficiencies.
“Not only do the separate buildings affect operations, they are in need of significant investment to improve their condition.
“The proposals will help to tidy the site up from a series of disparate buildings with haphazardly arranged parking, to a sensibly and ordered arrangement, which helps to improve safety by reducing the number of pedestrians moving between the buildings.”
They added: “The current car parking layout around the building is a haphazard arrangement, providing 69 car parking spaces.
“The car parking provision is operational parking, providing space to safely and securely park the fleet of Royal Mail vans when they are not in use.”
The first phase of the work would see the removal of a vehicle car wash, fuel pump station and storage building to allow for car parking to be relocated.
The extension to the main building would then be created followed by the demolition of the existing sorting hall.
The architects said the site would remain operational throughout the development.
The local authority is expected to make a decision on the application at a later date.
