John Green was a fanatical Liverpool fan and had been looking forward to Liverpool/Real Madrid cup clash this weekend

A loving wife has told of her shock after her 39-year-old husband, a much-loved Slaithwaite postman and Liverpool FC fan, died just weeks after being told he had stomach cancer.

Jackie Green, 37, says she has been overwhelmed by the response of members of the community especially members of Slaithwaite C of E Junior and Infant School which organised a special Wear Red day on Thursday in memory of John - a fanatical Reds fan and Liverpool FC season ticket holder.

Jackie, who has a nine-year-old son Stevie at the school, said they had been together for almost 18 years and had been married for eight. She said he had died on May 9 only three weeks after being told he had stomach cancer.

She said: "The amount of support has been overwhelming. John was very well-known because of his job and would always go the extra mile to help people. He was very strong after he was diagnosed with cancer. He went to hospital after he had been sick for six days and was cared for at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and later on, Kirkwood Hospice.

"It's lovely what the school have done, the children, parents, teachers, everyone has been very kind. £800 has been raised for Guts UK, a charity dedicated to fighting digestive diseases. The problem with gastric cancer is that by the time the symptoms show it's usually too late and people need more information about it. I really want to stop this from happening to other people."

"Employers are always seeking more productivity from workers, without considering the human factor, the worker's age, the weather conditions and the intense heat. We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."
