Royal Mail is proud to have rolled out an all-electric fleet of vehicles at its Leighton Buzzard Delivery Office.
On April 29 staff waved goodbye to 43 diesel vans, which were replaced by electric ones as part of the company’s nationwide roll-out.
12 electric charging posts have also been installed on the site as part of the transformation, and the electricity for powering the office and for charging the vehicles is purchased via a 100 per cent renewable tariff.
Andrew Selous, MP for South West Bedfordshire, said: "I am very impressed at the investment the Royal mail has made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in this way and know that many organisations have now realised that the whole life cost of electric vehicles is an extremely competitive option with the tax incentives provided."
It is said that the move will help the Leighton Buzzard’s postmen and postwomen deliver letters and parcels safely and efficiently, while producing fewer emissions.
Meanwhile, it is part of a wider plan to roll out 3,000 electric vans to delivery office locations across the UK, making Royal Mail the largest electric fleet of any UK parcel operator.
Nazam Ali, Leighton Buzzard delivery office manager, said: “It’s been great to have the opportunity to be leading the way in the rollout of Royal Mail’s new electric fleet.
"The new vans will be become a familiar site on the streets of Leighton Buzzard and our posties are really excited about doing their bit to reduce air and noise pollution in the town. As a company, we pride ourselves with having the lowest reported CO2e emissions per parcel amongst major UK delivery companies and showcasing the way to achieving a more sustainable future for our fleet and our planet.”
Royal Mail already has the lowest reported CO2e emissions per parcel amongst major UK delivery companies, and boasts a unique, "Feet on the Street", network of over 85,000 postmen and women, with three quarters of parcel deliveries are made purely by foot or through a park and loop method, combining low mileage van movements and on-foot delivery, keeping emissions low.

We need to intervene before it's too late, reducing working hours and the load carried by workers, because it's impossible to sustain the rhythm they're forced to work at for many years."

Why? Didn't they work?

Are the postmen and women of Leighton Buzzard producing emissions or are the vehicles?

Re: Royal Mail rolls out 43 electric vans at Leighton Buzzard delivery office
We're in the process of getting electric vans at my DO. Only trouble is there's 3 times as many vans as charging points and 2 of them have already stopped working properly, meaning 4 less vans can be charged as should be. Each charging point has 2 sockets!
The new vans are bigger than the old ones and the yard has effectively been made smaller, due to various barriers and bollards being put in.
It was chaos before, now it's a nightmare!

43 vans and 12 charging points.
So even if 2 vans can use a charging points at the same time that's 19 vans that wont be able to be charged that day
Now that may be fine if the DO is only operating locally and no more than 50 miles a day, but how will that work in practice, being charged every other da. like postie is late back, charging points full and van is low on juice, it is out of action the next day.
How many will be out of practical use until charged

Everything will be OK in the end, If it's not OK, then its not the end.

They dont need charging every day, van I had training in had 170 miles on overnight charge, so should be able to sort it.
