Royal Mail orders fleet of 3,000 electric vans

Royal Mail has ordered 3,000 electric vans and says it aims to continue to drive down its emissions.

The group said it had 300 electric delivery vehicles on the road and aimed to have the new ones in operation within this financial year. It will also install charging points at all the sorting offices that will take the new vehicles.

Royal Mail said it would help it to further reduce the carbon footprint of its deliveries, which it said was the lowest among big parcel carriers. It said it would also “increasingly make more economic sense than diesel vehicles in the long term”. The vans will be a mixture of Peugeot and Mercedes vehicles.

Chief executive Simon Thompson said: “Due to our feet on the street delivery model, we are the clear leader in low emissions per parcel in the UK.

“Electrification of our vehicle fleet will strengthen our advantage.

“We look forward to working with vehicle manufacturers and government to increase supply so we can accelerate our transition to electric vehicles in the UK.

“It matters to our customers, and it matters to us.”

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

If they’d kept bicycles their emissions would be a lot lower, but of course they worked so they got rid of them. Another stupid initiative to file alongside mask wearing , etc etc.

How many parcels could you deliver using a bicycle?
Bicycle use was always dependant on having a support vehicle and that was in the days before the internet shopping boom.
It was also highly dangerous and inappropriate for many areas due to terrain.
What is the connection to mask wearing apart from to show your prejudices?

Yard space is probably going to be the biggest issue with these, having enough space so that each electric van has a dedicated parking spot for charging. Locally if RM think they can plug them into a charging point outside of the RM depots, they can dream on, there's only a handful of charging points around town

What happened to the idea of a fleet of e-bike "rickshaws" with the large secure letter/parcel storage compartment?

Bad enough going to the van to find no fuel in it. It'll be great in the morning, to find the Lineo has unplugged the extension lead for the vans to plug the coffee pot in :Very Happy  :Very Happy
