Police dog sniffs out drugs worth £40,000 at Shetland sorting office

A police dog has been praised after helping snare almost £40,000 worth of drugs being smuggled into Shetland.

Canine sleuth Bravo detected the suspicious package during a routine search at the Royal Mail sorting office in Lerwick.

Inside, officers found herbal matter believed to be cannabis along with suspected cannabis vapes. The haul has an estimated value of £38,345.

Local response officers, supported by specialist teams from the Aberdeen Operational Support Unit and Dogs Against Drugs, carried out the search on Monday, February 16, 2026.

Police say enquiries remain ongoing.

Chief Inspector Chris Sewell said: “We are determined to protect Shetland by disrupting the supply and distribution of harmful substances, preventing them being circulated in our community and addressing the concerns of local people.

“We will continue to take action against those involved in such criminality and will fully investigate all reports.
