JOINT STATEMENT BETWEEN ROYAL MAIL AND THE CWU REGARDING COMPACT LARGE LETTER & LETTER SORTER (CLLLS) – UPDATE

Dear Colleagues

Branches and representatives will be aware that LTB 061/17 shared the Terms of Reference between Royal Mail and the CWU Covering the Installation and Deployment of a Compact Large Letter & Letter Sorter (CLLLS) at Exeter Mail Centre, which had been agreed to enable pilot activity to take place.

The pilot has now concluded and following the agreed review of the activity the attached Joint Statement has been agreed to communicate the outcome and next steps.

Colleagues will note that at this stage the business has decided that it will not be their intention to proceed with the purchase of further CLLLS machines and that the pilot machine that was based at Exeter MC will now be relocated to NWMMC.

Any enquiries in relation to this LTB should be addressed to:

Is this a first step towards the realisation that the 'stop prepping the prepped' plan and the possible elimination of sorting frames in DOs was a fail idea and has been dropped ???

It was probably never going to be financially viable, there just isn't the amount of large letters being posted to justify the cost of a machine to sort them. It'll only be financially viable to have a machine sort them if that machine could sort them along with letters at the same time/together

Bearing in mind that this is a semi-public site - and that everyone involved from the Royal Mail surely put into 100 percent into this trial - any insights why this didn't work out?

Blackadder: That's right. There was one tiny flaw in the plan.

George: Oh, what was that?

Blackadder: It was bollocks

Talking to one of the drivers out of Exeter one of the problems was that staff kept on being taken off the machine to cover other duties , it needed 5 members of of staff to operate it correctly.

The “ walksorted” trays of flats dried up before Christmas pressure in my office and we have had nothing since.

I guess the trial failed due to lack of correct resource , can’t think where I have heard that before
