Hi, find below the Mount Pleasant bulletin of the 3rd of July - the back and front pages are attached. Comments welcome!

WHAT NOW FOR ROMFORD?
Did RM management really not know that the
lease at the Romford site was coming up for
renewal? They claim they just found out – 9
months before it expires! Hard to believe. But of
course, it is easier for RM to blame a possible
closure on the leaseholder than to blame
themselves.
The question still stands though: what will
happen to the workforce? We hear a “joint
working group” has been set up and will meet on
July 10th and “a full update will follow”...

CONVENIENT FOR HIS STRATEGY
Of course, the announcement at Romford MC
comes at a time when RM boss Rico Backward
talks about “efficiencies” and Amazonising RM.
Yes, RM wants to continue its drive to close Mail
Centres and bring more postcodes into fewer
larger MCs... This is not only about Romford MC
– it concerns us all!

MAIL-Y-GO-ROUND
In the midst of RM's plans, we've noticed mail
going on diversion all over the place. So we end
up with mail from the North, from Twickenham and
elsewhere... And Greenford MC ends up with mail
which should come to MP! They've created this
huge log-jam and they don't know how to unjam it
– why should we try to help?

FROM EACH ACCORDING TO THEIR DUTY...
For us on F/T, the hour off the working week, due
this October, would be welcome. But not when
the bosses seem to be trying to grab back as
much as they can from that “loss”... Like giving us
two or more duties-worth of work in one shift! No,
it should be one duty, one worker...!

...AND WHAT WE NEED!
This isn't right: only 65 among us part-timers were
“lucky” to get the extra 8hrs (or only 4 hours) per
week to try to cover for the obvious lack of hands.
But what about the rest (150!) of us part-timers?
After the managers' re-sign shambles, ALL PTers
who want a decent full-time job should get one –
period.

SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER
No wonder managers are struggling to get people
to cover Saturdays... Problem is that there's not
been a Saturday nor a Friday night shift premium
for a while! The bosses may be trying to shift
goalposts and cut costs, but as far as we're
concerned, unsociable hours remain UNSOCIABLE!
And should be paid for!

FINES INSTEAD OF BONUSES?
Of course, now that managers have missed out on
their cherished bonuses, they're trying to breathe
twice as hard down our necks... in the hope of
having better luck next time? But the workload
won't clear on managers' hot air – and if they keep
up this game, it might not clear at all...

TAKING IT EASY
As per usual, the air-con's not much good in the
summer heat. Even though we're sweltering here,
we're supposed to only take a 40-min lunch break
to recover. Some of us have been around a while,
and we seem to remember it being an hour... And
what about taking heat reliefs, as needed?

MACHINE LEARNING
Those of us on the CSS are happy our training is
over (only for 3 days, but better than nothing!).
Yet, we still don't know when the training for the
TOPs 2000 is meant to start... Not that those who
are asked to train us are to blame, of course.
Were it up to them, the training would have been
arranged properly!

INCHES OR CENTIMETERS?
Oh dear, the temporary Phoenix gate they've built
for distribution and collection vans is too small to
drive comfortably out of here... Yes, after
managers brought in vans which were too tall,
now they've come up with an exit that is too small.
We wonder where they get their measuring tapes?

TOO EARLY FOR THE PANTO
On lates in the bullring, the JV6½ keeps getting in
our way – acting as she were on a stage. Or
maybe she thinks she can give us one..? But no,
she's only giving us a laugh!

YES WE NEED VISITORS!
So now we can't visit our workmates during prison
visiting hours after we've retired? The PFS
Elephant and his deputy elephant stamped their
feet when one of our friends came to see us and
said she wasn't “allowed”! It's just silly - but if
need be, let's make it official! Retirees all
welcome!

MC closures where did that come from?

Only thing I can think of is with parcel sorting machines, RM is going to want to maximise the usage of them (risk of smaller MCs loosing some parcels (probably all 2C) traffic to MCs that have got parcel sorting machines)

As regards the effects of the parcel strategy it will be same with MCs as with DOs. IF it gets the go-ahead the loss of parcel & Tracked business will mean closure or amalgamation of both types of sites. Loss of jobs from MCs & relocation of staff for DOs.

I'd expect RM to at some point look into machine sorting the smaller parcels that remain with DOs down to walk level and possibly look at machines that can sort and sequence all flats and letters together

I suspect a lot of M/Cs function will have changed in 5 years. These 3 Supercentres are really gamechanges.

Really sad situation and a bit demoralising but it's now market forces at work.
