Same topic on Jeremy Vine on BBC Radio 2 immediately after 12 o'clock - available on BBC Sounds if you want to listen.
He had some former and current posties ringing up explaining what the real story is.

Hopefully the increased public outcry over this at the minute could push public sentiment towards nationalisation of the company. A public service will never be functional while its run as a business

I've not heard one MP suggest that re-nationisation was the answer? I agree there's no way delivering NHS letters etc to potentially every household in the UK will ever be profitable, particularly with letter volumes dropping. I wonder be at all surprised if DK doesn't eventually do similar to what he's done in the Netherlands, ask for Government support.CatEnthusiast13 wrote: ↑16 Feb 2026, 18:30Hopefully the increased public outcry over this at the minute could push public sentiment towards nationalisation of the company. Re: BBC mainstream reporting on poor postal service today
Governments usually avoid taking back national infrastructure unless there is a total systemic failure because it's expensive and there isn't a quick fix for the structural decline in letters. If government support ever happened it would more likely involve adjusting delivery frequency and reforming USO targets rather than removing the USO entirely or allowing RM to turn into a parcel only courier.
From RM's point of view it doesn't make sense to completely get rid of letters while trying to grow parcels as they both use the last mile operation

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

according to a article in the times the dutch government kicked his proposal of financial help into touch. but that doesn't mean he won't try it here. if the uso is to remain they might want paying to do it.TopperGas wrote: ↑16 Feb 2026, 18:36I've not heard one MP suggest that re-nationisation was the answer? With this desperate government anything could happen. They could promise to take letters and sting the tax payer for billions to make sure their pizza leaflets arrive everyday.
The Government like the moaning public rarely think things through. They want the best service for the cheapest option. And that never works.

Re: BBC mainstream reporting on poor postal service today
The government does not want anything to do with even the thought of nationalising RM. The Treasury can't find the money to fill the money sinks it already has. The whole point of agreeing to the sale last year was to make sure the question of renationalisation would never arise, or if it did it would be well beyond the lifetime of this parliament and therefore some other government's problem. No amount of desperation would see it happen voluntarily - only a crisis which forced it to step in, as with certain banks in 2008.
Any Questions?
Yeah, how do I get out of this chickenshit outfit?
