Disruptions caused by delayed postal deliveries - Ivybridge

A LOCAL councillor is concerned about mail delivery times as late post keeps causing him to miss appointments and suffer delays with work.

Ivybridge town councillor Tom Bowden said that post has taken up to a week to arrive at his Marshall Drive home and is not being delivered until late in the afternoon.

He added that he had in fact missed important medical appointments due to post arriving late and that other residents had approached him with similar concerns about the delays, which have been happening since Easter.

Cllr Bowden has tried to contact Royal Mail directly and was told that changes had taken place at the local sorting office but said he is not satisfied with the explanation.

He said: ‘I have sent emails off asking why this is happening and been told that there have been changes at the Ivybridge office, but I haven’t been told why. I sometimes don’t get my post until 4.30pm, causing me to miss medical appointments and receive important work documents very late. The internet is very useful but I rely heavily on post to get things done.

‘Sometimes our post doesn’t get here for up to five or six days after it was sent, which is bad considering the standard for second class is two to three days. Other residents have approached me asking what can be done so I have taken the matter forward on their behalf.

‘From various conversations I’ve had I understand that staffing levels have changed from one per round to about 10 to be rotated and used elsewhere, and if someone is on holiday their round does not get appropriately covered.

‘It’s just not right – especially as consumer costs have gone up.

‘Postal workers used to be a huge part of our everyday lives, alerting neighbours if something looked out of the ordinary, and now no one knows who their local postman is. I just hope that any changes which have been made since Easter can take this inconvenience into account and be rectified.’

Royal Mail spokesperson Mike Norman said: ‘I have spoken with the delivery sector manager in the area. There has been a small change in the office however he assures me mail is still delivered within current specification, therefore before 3pm. We introduced operational changes at our delivery office in Ivybridge and this resulted in some customers experiencing their mail being delivered at different times. The changes are part of our nationwide modernisation programme, which is aimed at offering our customers a cost effective service, which safeguards the one-price-goes-anywhere universal service.

‘We do try to deliver mail as early as possible, but we are unable to guarantee the exact time of delivery. If any customer experiences continued delays with receipt of their mail, we encourage them to contact our customer services team on 08457 740 740 or visit our website http://www.royalmail.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.’

Not likely. If anything, they will want to move closer to 9 to 5 jobs.

Personally, I think it will more likely end up as working yourself into an early grave. That way, they save on pensions etc..... :evil/mad

Late hospital appointments aren't always caused by RM .
Our Hospital sends out their appts by TNT and take over a week to get to US and and its the RM postie that gets the blame when the appt was yesterday.
I think these big companies think that TNT delivers next day 1ST class with bank statements and hospital appointments

Not always there can be cancellation and they can offer it to the most urgent case, my dad had 10 days notice just 2 months ago.
