Local MP Michael McCann has held talks with leaders of the Communication Worker Unions (CWU) to take forward the battle to keep the Crown Post Office open in East Kilbride town centre.

The CWU have held several days of industrial action over management plans to franchise the town’s main Post Office and the knock-on effect this will have on the service it provides.

MP Michael McCann, along with other local politicians, have oppose the sell-off of what a key public service in East Kilbride.

He said: “Many people don’t realise that Post Office Ltd is no longer part of Royal Mail.

“This is a crazy decision which has the potential to affect a range of customers in East Kilbride.

“In a nutshell, Post Office Ltd is proposing to franchise their operations in Crown Post Offices across the country, however, they are proposing that the franchisee will run the operation at a fraction of the current cost.

“The numbers don’t add up which could ultimately lead to a poorer service being delivered to customers.

“Anyone who visits the Post Office on a regular basis will know that it is a busy operation and it is already working above capacity.

“If anything, Post Office Ltd should be coming back to us and telling us that they are increasing the size of the Crown Post Office and putting in more staff to cope with demand.

Instead, they are making plans that will reduce the service and damage our local communities and as the local Member of Parliament I will do be doing all that I can to ensure that does not happen. I will be working closely with the CWU to make sure that this idea is dumped where it belongs, in the trash can.”

The Post Office say they are currently looking for a franchise partner for East Kilbride Post Office.
